Habit 6 Blog
Blog Entry due Sunday, January 4th at 12:00 noon. Syngergy requires creativity. Sometimes people abuse the privelege when allowed to be creative, so bosses or teachers put rules in place to prevent such abuse. However, those rules can often stifle or kill creativity and productivity. Name an instance in your life (school, home or work) where the rules in place have prevented you from being able to be creative or more productive and what harm this caused.

Often times when writing English papers the overly strict rules destroy my creativity. The topics are often so narrow that if I find something intresting about what I am writing the paper over I can't go into it because it is "off topic".
Taks has a prompt on what to write about and it makes you have to jsut thing about one topic . they should let us have free writing, because its more fun. This caused a probllem cause it didnt let us use our full creativity.
School is probably the place where we are most limited and unable to be creative. many people have different ways of learning and performing well on projects and tests. the situations where i feel my creativity is most yielded is when i am not allowed to write on tests. I am a very visual learner and marking through answers, writing defintions, working problems, and drawing pictures all help me do much better on tests than i do when i am not allowed to write on them
School is a place where your creativity is limited. My biggest pet peeve is not being able to write on tests. I feel that it slows my productivity and makes me unable to finish the test to the best of my ability.
This has happened to me plenty of times with projects. I would like to go all out and be creative but certain restrictions prevent me from doing that.
I have never really been put through something like that i often do what i feel i need to do or want to do.. Rules dont get in my way.
sometimes the rules not letting me be creative really hurts in the classroom especially if i have a great idea but the rules of the assignment dont allow for it
In my job, I have a set script, therefore I am unable to let creativity flow through me. I don't get to make up what I am going to say, so my creativity is being destroyed.
I haven't really experienced a time in my life where I wasn't allowed to "be creative" but I can definitely empathize with whoever has. I could see how that would be frustrating and hamper productivity in a lot of people.
One time during a lesson in my chemistry class, I had this extremely awesome beat and song layout that I knew had to be written down, or else I would forget it. When I pulled out my notebook my teacher was displeased with me to say the least, and made me put it away. Well, I never got the chance to write down the beat pattern or any part of that song, and now no one will ever know how that song would end up sounding thanks to a chemistry lesson... Not much harm was done other than killing my creative vibe for the rest of the day, and ruining what could have been the next number one on the charts.
A situation where creativity was hindered because of rules was a project where you had to use quotes from a book to do a project and the quotes were already given and i felt had i been able to pick my own i could have done a better job.
I have been remarkably lucky in my short lifetime to have very few instances where rules have been placed that have limited my creativity or productivity and caused harm. Indeed, the only instance I can possibly think of are the rules my parents have placed about going out on school nights. In my opinion, if my homework is done and I am home at a reasonable time (around or before 9) then going out shouldn't be a problem. They don't quite see it my way, and believe I would be better off staying home. This limits my productivity because I work best when I am working towards a goal such as going out with friends, or have the opportunity to relax, which I would gain from going out. Even this has caused only minor harm, simply because I take however long I want to do my homework, not really focusing because there is no goal to work for, except even more work, which is hardly inspiring.
Mostly this happens in art or english class. In english, I may have a really good idea for an essay, but the topic the teacher gives may not be related to what I am thinking. This makes it harder for me to write and usually results in a lower grade. In art, I may be good at drawing one thing, but am forced to draw something I am not good at drawing, like people. This always brings my grade down.
An instance in my life where there where rules that prevented me from being able to be creative or productive is in school, a lot of times in english we have limits on essays we can right about and it limits my creativity and potentially hurts my grade. I am the type of person when i am limited to something it is hard for me to get into it at all, when i am forced to write about something im not instresred in im not going to go all out, im just going to be stressed and worried about making the paper good, as well as believeable, and a lot of times i am restricted and rules are placed on things such as papers, i will make a worse grade as if i had no limits on what i could or could not write about.
I would have to say, during last years 'mouse trap car' project in physics, the rules and guidelines on the car, disabled me to be creative when creating it and could only make it go a certain distance under a certain size, so I could not worry about what it looked like when i could have made it look B.A.
Just recently, I was assigned an independent writing assignment in my english class. She gave us the freedom to write about whatever we felt like writing about, but she gave us a minimum page requirement and the restriction of MLA format. Without these restrictions, I was planning on writing a clever short story about my day including illustrations and a varied format, however her restrictions stifled my creativity. As a result my finished product was nothing more than random ink blots telling a useless boring anecedote. No me gusta.
All you have to do is look at preschool and all the times you are trying to do something fun or original and the teacher yells at you to stop. I mean if I want to jump of the jungle gym why can't I be creative about how I do it? But noooo I have to follow the rules and not jump of it so I could never find out if I could fly or not...what's the deal.
Great comments so far! Sorry that your creativity has occassionally been stifled, but keep trying to express yourself!
In basketball, we have certain plays we are forced to run. Sometimes while running those plays there are times when you just want to create and just score even though its not part of the play.
i'm not super creative, so when i comes to restrictions, they typically dont affect me as much as they could someone else.
There have been many times during school when my creativity has been hindered. During my math class in 10th grade we had a project. Rather than having a choice in how to set up our presentations, we were only allowed to use poster board. If we had been allowed to make a video or even a power point presentation my project may have been much better because of the flexibility.
When it comes to school i think you can go into any classrom in any subject and you will see someone's creativity being stifled. In particular i think Englsh essays are a great example in that even when they say you can write about whatever you want they end up putting alot of restrictions, just because they are trying to stop a couple people from writing about something inappropriate.
Possibly one of the most stifling and traumatizing periods of my life took place in my seventh-grade "art class". Completely disregarding every artisitc innovation of the past two hundred years, my "art" teacher looked upon my avant garde style as "without effort", or " just terrible". As such, he constantly punished me for breaking the oppressive traditions of Salon-style artwork. In the tradition of Jean-François Millet, I constantly fought for the ingenuity of my art, but to no avail. In the end, my dreams were crushed, and I, along with my broken brush, were cast from the classroom. And that's why I will never again take an art class.
Sometimes rules in school dont allow me to use my full creative potential
In art class we made african masks. i made an amazing mask but apparently my teacher thought that the beautiful turquoise and large features were unrealistic. In reality, it was the best mask ever made. My dream to be creative and make something incredibly cool was destroyed when she laughed and gave me an 88. What a failure.
School is definitely a place where the majorities of student’s creativity are restricted by teachers and administrative individuals who are “just doing their jobs”. The restriction on creativity could happen in virtually any classroom, especially in classes that reqires a certain degree of creativity such as art and writing classes such as English. One of the most troublesome problems facing any student today could be none than the inane prompts or DBQs which teachers are regularly making students to accomplish. Writing itself is created to express thoughts, and putting a requirement leash around it and also penalizing the student or express creativity is such writings is doing the exact opposite of what writing is all about.
One instance where I find my creativity most limited is during the taks writing section. On the SAT you at least have a theme to be writing about which you can explore. On taks there is one specific topic. WThis greatly limits creativity.
For english, there are many promts that restrict you from being creative in your writing since it only gives you a short variety of things to write about.
on some school projects you are supposed to make a poster or something to convey a point. The poster could be great but insead there are rules to follow and your creativity is stopped.
Any writing prompt in Quest is severly restrictive.
To contain every idea of a story in a simple prompt is lunacy.
I could produce mountains of work but rules cut it down to mole hills
My response is in response to FOX. What does B.A. mean? Haha just kidding. I would have to say that I experienced the same thing. The mouse trap cars prohibited my ability to express myself.
I feal that im not restricted by rules very often, but at my old job i felt i couldnt use my creativity because whenever i had to stock shelves i always had to do it a certain way even if i felt it wasnt the best way to do things.
When i am writing papers in English class there are always restirictions that cut off my creativity. I have to follow MLA guidlines and page restrictions. This guy is still a QUACK!!
I think school administrators destroy students creativity, especially at Carroll. Practically forcing us to do 4 years of math, 4 years of english, 3 years of foreign language, 3(?) years of science really puts a limit on the classes we take in high school. You should take many different classes in high school to learn what you're interested in
I was in a class last year called Quest, and it allowed you to be as creative as you want. It seemed though when i brought that creativity to other classes, they were not as accepting. I think it is important to be creative and think outside the box because it demonstrates who you are.
Every day i waste in school, is plagued with restriction. Not only am i forced to read terrible books and follow ridiculous guidlines on everything, my creativity is stifled due to the wishes of my teachers. Quest english is rumored to be a creative class, but restriction is the first thing that comes to mind. Get me out of here.
Although throughout most of my life I have been freely able to express my creativity, there is one instance in particular that I remember having to contain my creativity. When I was in the fifth grade, I was in Destination Imagination with four other fifth graders and one sixth grader. The only requirements fro our skit was that we had to have an object transform into another object while maintaining the integrity of the original object’s shape. By having this requirement, the whole skit ended up having to be centered on the one transforming objects. Consequently, many other creative ideas were repressed.
I believe that a common place where creativity can be diminished is at work because even though sometimes you may be asked for creativity there is a limit or they just don't listen to you. This can cause bad communicatioon skills between boss and employee as well as make the employee feel like their opinions aren't important
My creativity has been stifled in the past by restrictive guidelines placed on English papers. Often times, I will want to write about something other than what the prompt asks. When I can't write about what I want to, my grades go down because I'm not interested in the topic.
When i write for school it mostly has to be relevant to a prompt and involves little or no creativity on my part. when i write i like to write about what i want and let my mind expand on my own topic.
When I was pursuing a singing career a few years ago, I had to have an agent to help me slide into the industry. The negative part about this plan was that this agent started to set multiple rules that I had to follow in order to "make it in the industry". It stifled my creativity when it came to writing my songs and creating different types of music, which I used to love to do. This agent caused me to not enjoy my dream as much as I had wished, driving me away from it to try other things.
I feel like my creativity is often limited in school, because of all the school rules we are obligated to follow. For example, when I can't write on tests, I feel like it will effect my performance on the test, because I like to write everything out. Another example is when I'm assigned a specific topic for an essay, it limits my creativity because I can't write about anything I want.
Most projects that are done in school no matter the subject, it could be art or english, the guidelines are very restrictive. You may have an idea that you're excited about, but then you realize that it's not exactly what the guidelines want you to do and by having to change your idea you lose some of the interest you had in the project which causes your work not to be as good as it could have been.
I often think that my creativity is most limited at work. Since i work in retail i like to put certain outfits together to make them look better but we have to follow certain guidelines by our cooperate office.
I'm not creative at all. It is rare that I think outside of the box and use my creativity to make something better, therefore rules or guidlines do not generally effect me.
my creativity was hindered by rules when i was in physics last year. my teacher assigned a project and because we could only use certain resources, my project was less efficient than it had the potential to be.
I very much agree Ryan V's comment. if i want to play on a jungle gym i should be able to.
Ever since i have left Quest English, i feel that i have been stifled creatively. Quest English was full of fun, creative assignments that challenged both my knowledge of the material as well as my ability to think outside of the box. Now that i am in AP, the work is much more traditional and involves little to no creative thinking. Although I chose to take AP English, I still feel that we should do more things creatively
When I did the perpetual motion project in physics last year all the requirements and measurements really limited the amount of creativity I could use on the project
At home I cocncentrate, work, and study best when i have music to listen to. However in school one is not allowed to listen to music. The inabilty to listen to music prvides distractions and other obstacles at school. If i had the oppurtunity to listen to music at school i would be able to achieve so much more at school and as well as enabling my creativity.
Sometimes rules have restricted my creativity in the classroom becuase of overly strict rules on assignmets.
Sometimes in class teachers limit the amount of editing you can do to a certain type of paper or any other project. They do not want you to go off the certain topic that is assigned
